Kendra Atleework

was born and raised in the high desert of Bishop, California. Her first book, Miracle Country, was highlighted by The New York Times’ “Books that Explain California” and won the Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award, the Women Writing the West WILLA Literary Award, and was the 2020-2021 pick for Nevada’s statewide books club, Nevada Reads. Kendra holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Nonfiction Writing from the University of Minnesota. She has been awarded fellowships and residencies from the Bread Loaf Writers Conference, the Anderson Center, the Ellen Meloy Desert Writers Award, and the Minnesota State Arts Board. Her writing has appeared in Best American Essays, The Atlantic, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and elsewhere. Read more of her writing here.
